Health authorities in several African countries are waging a battle against so-called “female Viagra” – the pharmaceutical drug that female sex hormonesolders like to use to treat erectile dysfunction – as they struggle to balance the dosage that’s prescribed among users.
Some of the most famous and widely prescribed female Viagra has produced the same effects as Viagra in its form, sold under the brand name Cialis. But because the drug was so widely used – in 1998, after a number of African countries were plunged into more dry and bloody times – the market for the drug in Africa is squeezed out.
The African government has given its blessing to the drug’s development in developing countries, encouraging it to be approved in Africa by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). But health authorities are waging a battle against so-called “female Viagra” – the pharmaceutical drug that female sex hormonesolders like to use to treat erectile dysfunction – as they struggle to balance the dosage that’s prescribed among users.
“It is clear from the available data that this issue is a matter of political and economic instability,” said Dr. Adele F. Lachandweele, a professor at the Medical School at the University of the Wit-de-Loko in Wit-de-Loko.
“We are having trouble balancing the dosage we need,” she said.

In February, the African Health Products Regulatory Authority (AHPA) approved a drug called Addyi – which is an oral tablet taken by mouth as a libido booster – for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).
“In March 2018, the FDA approved a drug for the treatment of HSDD,” Lachandweele said.
“That drug is used off-label for the treatment of HSDD in women, and also for the treatment of HSDD in men,” she added.
In a statement to Healthline, the government said it was “very concerned” about the rising demand for so-called female Viagra, and “we are taking steps to ensure that this medication is used only as directed.”
The drug Addyi, a female version of which works by increasing blood flow to the penis, was originally developed to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Lachandweele said the drug was originally developed to treat other sexual disorders, and was later tweaked into its current use in women.
In 2010, the FDA approved Addyi for the treatment of HSDD in women. The drug was initially only used for the treatment of HSDD in men.
Although the drug was approved by the FDA for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder, Lachandweele said there is good evidence that women’s sexual desire, particularly their desire for sex, increases as they age.
“It can be hard to find a way to balance the dosage,” she said.
For those women whose sexuality is severely limited due to their medical conditions, Lachandweele said the drug can be prescribed to help improve their sex life.
“It can be helpful for a number of women with HSDD, but we want to see better results from our drugs in this regard,” she said.

“The University of the Wit-de-Loko’s Sexual Medicine Clinic has a responsibility to ensure that there is sufficient access to the drug for all patients to receive,” Dr. Lachandweele said.

On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the erectile dysfunction medication Cialis. When marketed asCialis Together(tadalafil 10mg), it will be a ‘P’ (pharmacy) medication, and so available ‘over the counter’ in pharmacies – see. Cialis Together will be available to purchase in pharmacies without a prescription by men over 18 with erectile dysfunction. Cialis Together tablets will contain 10mg tadalafil and the maximum pack size will be 8 tablets. Other doses and pack sizes of Cialis and tadalafil will still be available on prescription through doctors and specially trained pharmacists. Before purchase in a pharmacy there must be an assessment with a pharmacist, who will check that Cialis Together is appropriate and safe, or whether consultation with a GP is necessary.
Men suffering with ED will have another treatment option with the convenience of purchasing it in their local pharmacy, including pharmacies found inside supermarkets (eg. Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s). The pharmacist will ask some health questions, may check blood pressure, and will advise on treatment with Cialis Together or Viagra Connect, or the need to consult a GP. Pharmacies usually have a private room for such discussions.
Cialis Together is a 10mg tadalafil product for use at least 30 minutes prior to anticipated sexual activity. Its effects can last. It is not recommended for daily use. The maximum recommended dose of Cialis Together will be one tablet in 24 hours. Prescription Cialis and tadalafil will still be available at different doses.
